Scientific Name:
Ara ararauna

Classification:

Order : Psittaciformes

Family : Psittacidae

Description
:
Blue & yellow macaw are long-lived birds, with a life expectancy of approximately 50-60 years. The parrots at risk of extinction and those deemed near-threatened face a wide range of pressures. In general, however, the principal sources of threat arise from habitat loss and collection of birds for the live bird trade. Some 73 species recognized at risk of global extinction are believed to be negatively affected by habitat loss, fragmentation or degradation, while 39 are under pressure from trapping to the extent that it may contribute significantly to their extinction, with at least 28 species affected by both pressures.

Behavior:
The brilliant coloured macaw, which include 17 species are among the largest birds in the Parrot Family. Their strong jaws and powerful beaks enable them to crack open hard-shelled nuts. They also use their beaks like a third foot while climbing. Incubation period is 28-30 days.

Open Woodlands, Water Courses, Savannah, Lowland Forest and Mangrove Swamps.
