Description:
Top of head, brown, very dark on the hind-crown and nape; rest of
head and neck, brown; paler on chin; mantle, shoulders and upper
back, blackish with reddish buff scaly markings; lower back and
rump, black; upper tail coverts, chestnut; tail, black; wings, blackish,
with a maroon-chestnut patch; breast, grey brown merging into chestnut
on the abdomen; flanks, grayish, with a few white streaks; under
tail coverts, whitish; bill and feet, slate grey; 16 inches.
Behavior:
A shy bird frequenting flooded rice-fields, small sheets of water
and some rivers, notably the Perak River, Malaysia. The call is
a clear plaintive whistle.
Distribution:
Common in Peninsular Thailand, but less so in the Malaysian States
and not often seen south of Selangor.
Habitat:
Flooded rice fields, small sheets of water and some rivers.
